We are pleased to invite submission of abstracts for free paper and poster presentations at Infection Prevention 09. The conference provides an opportunity to share the latest practitioner research, advances in audit and surveillance and service improvement initiatives in the field of infection prevention across the health and social care economy. The themes of this year’s conference are:

Informing expert practice
Promoting infection prevention excellence
Sustaining systems for patient safety

In order to submit your free paper/ poster you must first register as a conference delegate. If your attendance is dependent upon your abstract being accepted for presentation you are not required to make a payment until after you have been notified of the review panel’s decision. When registering, tick ‘Free Paper/ Poster Entrant’ in the payment section. You will be contacted to make full payment once the decisions of the review panel have been communicated. In order to submit your abstract you will need to wait for the email confirmation of your registration and follow the link to sign back in to your registration page. Abstract themes

Abstracts on all aspects of infection prevention are invited. However, research and service improvement reports in the following areas are particularly welcomed:

Antimicrobial prescribing and stewardship
Epidemiology and surveillance of healthcare associated infection
Behavioural aspects of infection prevention
Clinical leadership in infection prevention
Communicable disease prevention
Community acquired infection, prevention and control
Education of healthcare staff and the public
Improving the evidence base for practice and service improvement
Improving the patient experience
Infection prevention in specialist areas such as cancer care, mental health, prisons, renal care
Outbreak management
Patient and public involvement
Patient safety

Conditions of Submission

The presenting author must register to attend the conference prior to submitting an abstract(s). Payment is not required until confirmation of acceptance.
Abstracts will only be accepted if received online in the requested format.
Abstracts for oral presentations now closed, abstract submission for posters must be submitted online by Friday 31st July 2009 . An email confirmation of receipt will be sent within 48 hours.
Abstract selection will consider the quality of the study and demonstration of the abstract's relevance to the conference themes.
The first author should ideally be the presenting author - please note that all correspondence will be sent to the first author.
Please note the number of oral presentations and posters is limited and the selection panel may suggest an abstract is accepted in the alternative presentation format.
If selected for oral or poster presentation, authors are required to make their presentation available as a pdf. file for posting on the IPS Conference webpage.
Presenting authors are asked to consider submitting their presentation for peer reviewed publication in the Journal of Infection Prevention.
The first author will be notified of the decision of the selection panel by email by the end of July 2009, for late poster entrants submitting between the 29th June and 31st July the notification date is mid August. The decision of the panel is final.
Accepted abstracts will be reproduced in the printed and online programme.

Format of Abstracts

Authors should summarise their work in no more than 250 words using Arial 11pt.
Please indicate your preference of poster or oral presentation.
Use subheadings as indicated in the format guidelines.
Abstracts should not include diagrams or references
Organism names should be presented using italics - first use should be genus name in full e.g. Mycobacterium tuberculosis and any subsequent use should be upper case initial followed by a full stop eg. M. tuberculosis
All places, organisations and people must be anonymised.

Declaration of Interest

The Infection Prevention Society must ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in its educational activities. Therefore, all speakers are expected to declare any conflict of interest relevant to the presentation being given.
